Hiking to the top of Acro-Corinth is a workout, and the climbers are rewarded with a great view of the area.
The Beehive Tomb of Agamemnon is our next stop. HUG always sings here, so it's a special spot for us. Mycenae's Lion Gate welcomes us to the ruins of the ancient fortress across the way, and we tour the site. Our favorite Greek town, perfect for strolling and shopping, Nafplion is our last stop of the day.
The acoustics at the theater in Epidaurus - the location of the ancient cult of Asclepius, the mythological god of healing - are tested as Dr. Chance runs up the stairs to the top; humming the Rocky theme song, we encourage him to summit. Once he arrives, he hears a little coin dropped to the floor on center stage. Not much imagination is needed to picture people here from centuries ago being entertained by songs and drama. In fact, the summer theater season still uses this venue for productions.
James' dad is Andreas and is master of the grill. He burns olive wood under the grills to cook our steaks perfectly, telling us that the secret is knowing when to add the salt. Their house is the perfect setting for lunch and Lucas' birthday party (James' son who is now two years old). Christina (James' mom) serves her Italian veggie specialty, the recipe that "trapped" Andreas into marriage, and Jill (James' wife) serves her son's second birthday cake that she made with olive oil and oranges from their property. Katerina (James' daughter) contributes the pink streamers and balloons for decoration. We are honored to be invited into the family celebration.
What an adventure it's been this week on the Peloponnese. Never before have I harvested olives and, from now on, will appreciate the taste of this liquid gold even more than I already have. Knowing this special family and getting our hands dirty was an experience that we will treasure.
