Homemade Lunch, Volleyball, Birthdays and More!

Our campus was a welcome sight when we pulled up from our week-long trip to Turkey.  We’re all settled in now, and a handful of students missed Athens so much that they went into town today.  We just don’t slow down around here!  Saturday was full, even though we have plenty to do along with our laundry and studies… Natasa, the lady who cooks our delicious and healthy meals for us, invited the entire group into her home on Saturday.  She lives in a beautiful home near the sea.  So after some big eating from the gorgeous salads, meats, and casseroles that she spent time preparing for us, she and her family guided us on a walk down by the sea.  The view was stunning.  Oh, to have this blue water surrounding you every day…  We relaxed and soaked up the view – the water is so blue.  Goodness, the views just don’t stop in Greece because everywhere you turn, there’s water!  We returned to her home for coffee and dessert – worthy of mention – chocolate mousse, cherry cheesecake, a chocolate/hazelnut combination (I’m unsure of what it was called, but whatever you’re imagining – this was better), and a lemon dessert.  Lemon is my favorite.  Any kind of chocolate is tough to beat, but Natasa makes a lemon dessert that is out of this world.  Maybe it’s the fresh lemons…it’s powerful and sweet at the same time.  My mouth is watering right now, even as I type.

After the outing of food and fellowship with Natasa’s dear, sweet family, we loaded up and went to a volleyball game.  There is an American setter on the team near our campus.  European sports are different than what we’re used to – in the US, we have school sport and town sports.   We are more sentimentally attached to our school sports, while, in some cases, the town/travel/community sports may have greater competition (not always, I know)… Anyway, over here, the sports are all community sports.  There aren’t school teams.  So whoever lives in or near a community can join that team – it’s called a “club.”  Clay was saying that HU has a LOT of players who could play in Europe after their college career is completed – might earn a little income while learning about and traveling in a foreign country.  It’s a interesting and beneficial choice that some of HU’s athletes have made; a choice that Clay would like to see more HU athletes make if the circumstances are right for that person.

Women’s volleyball is big in Greece.  And A-C likes volleyball, too.  The fact that an American is playing on the team near us is a big bonus…makes us feel like we have a bit of a personal connection to the local team.  Our students met her after their win last night, and it was hard to tell who was more excited – them or her!  Seeing Americans in a different land is an instant connection, so we’re practically family already… The official volleyball season is almost over here, but it will begin again soon - it’s practically year round.  So, we’re excited to have a team for whom to cheer.  The Beasons miss the Bisons, and it’s not even football season!

More travel is upon us – we’re giving helpful hints today (we hope) to the students as they take on a bit of independent travel very soon.  Some people are planning their trips, some people are catching up on assignments for classes, some are exploring Athens a bit, and some are simply relaxing today.  It’s good to catch up on rest.  Everyone will get to sleep in a bit in the morning because classes start late – we want them to store up sleep for a night or two.  Healthy bodies = better days and memories!
