From HUGer Holly:
Today was our first day traveling around Turkey and wow, what a beautiful country so far and we've only seen one tiny part of it! Yesterday we got to meet our guide Omer, who has been very knowledgeable and humorous at the same time.
Today we started out going to Ephesus and walked around all the ruins that once made up houses, marketplaces, and other public places. While we were here we got to see one of the top 3 libraries in the world, the Library of Celsus. We walked to a theatre where John the Evangelist had spoken before. We stood on the stage and sang Magnificat and then read part of Acts 19. Towards the end of our time there we sat in the remains of a church and read the book of Ephesians out loud and the scripture that stood out most to me was 2:20-22 "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit."
Our time here is to focus on God and Jesus and all the works that have been done in the name of the Lord. I suddenly felt a bit closer to the group reading those words.
Next was the temple of Artemis which was once an amazing building now only survived by one large pillar.
We made two other stops today. One being a pottery/tile store. There were so many beautiful pieces and I honestly wish I could have bought more (don't worry mom I got you something!) :)
The other store was an extremely expensive leather store where we got to watch (and some got to be a part of) a fashion show. Don't worry parents no one bought anything because the cheapest article of clothing was probably around $300.
So far Turkey has been much more incredible than I imagined. The food is amazing and the scenery constantly amazes me.
